Vanderbilt Hall, Newport, Rhode Island, USA

Posted 24th November 2009 | Latest News

“A haven of tranquillity in the bustling resort of Newport!”

Vanderbilt Hall, a luxury mansion hotel, in the heart of Newport, Rhode Island has been purchased by Vanderbilt Hall Holdings LLC, a company under the leadership of Peter de Savary the well known English entrepreneur, yachtsman and philanthropist.

Vanderbilt Hall was constructed over 100 years ago during the “Gilded Age” by Alfred Vanderbilt as a residence for his mistress! It was subsequently used as a YMCA and latterly as a fine hotel.

The mansion has recently benefited from a major redesign and refurbishment of all its accommodations which now offer 33 superb suites ranging from 400 square feet – 3,000 square feet, each having its own wet bar and attractive views. The impressive reception rooms provide comfortably furnished lounging and dining areas with working log fireplaces. The intimate bar and garden conservatory complement the wonderful ambience of the mansion with its charming garden; whilst the roof terrace enjoys spectacular sunset views of Newport Harbour and Narragansett Bay.

Newport, a yachting mecca and known for its gilded mansions, has a rich history. Magnificent architecture is but one of the hallmarks of its charm and character whilst the famed waterfront provides excellent retail therapy and a wide variety of bars and restaurants. Newport is best enjoyed on foot, strolling through the streets or enjoying the splendours of the cliff walk.

Peter de Savary (known as PdeS) internationally renowned for, amongst others, his St James Clubs (London, New York, Paris, Los Angeles and Antigua), Stapleford Park, Bovey Castle, Glenborrodale Castle, The Abaco Club, Cherokee Plantation, Mount Cinnamon Resort, The Cary Arms and Skibo Castle. Having successfully created Carnegie Abbey a few years ago in Rhode Island, PdeS is thrilled to be back in Newport and to have the opportunity of establishing a new lease of life for Vanderbilt Hall. PdeS was the British challenger for the Americas Cup in 1983 with his yacht “Victory” in Newport. He and his family have enjoyed Newport for the past 30 years and hope that their efforts at Vanderbilt Hall will contribute to Newport life, be of benefit to the community and enrich the experience of all those who enjoy the Vanderbilt lifestyle at Vanderbilt Hall.

de Savary intends to redefine Vanderbilt Hall by improving certain elements of decor, furnishings and artwork and expanding the garden to include an outdoor swimming pool to compliment the spa and indoor pool. Most importantly, the hospitality experience will be transformed into the “PdeS” style, with a European touch, where guests at this mansion will be treated as if they were at a relaxed house party and not a hotel. The intimate “Monty’s Bar” (named after PdeS’ Chihuahua) will compliment casual dining with English quirks to the menu, emphasising fresh, local and seasonal produce.

Vanderbilt Hall will operate as a first class residential hotel open to all those wishing to stay. In addition, and independently, an international private members club “The Vanderbilt Club” will be established. The club will provide a wide range of benefits and privileges for its members to enjoy at several international locations including Newport. Membership details of the Vanderbilt Club will be forthcoming in the New Year.

Peter de Savary was quoted today as saying “Having entertained people from all over the world at my many international properties over the last 35 years, I feel honoured and privileged to have the chance of bringing my touch once again to Newport. I am excited and enthused, together with a dedicated team of colleagues, to be able to create a unique experience for those seeking a sense of fun, value, first class service and a little English eccentricity through the Vanderbilt lifestyle at Vanderbilt Hall”.
